The rules are simple: all you have to do is breathe. Subject One, while you are free to inhale and exhale at your own pace, you will constantly experience the scent of your friend. Your friend, Subject Two, depends on you as well. She can only inhale what you exhale. In this way, you're saving her from the scent.
